Veterinary Assistant

Bellevue Animal Hospital in Nebraska is currently seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, full-time (35-40 hours / week) Veterinary Assistant to join our AAHA-Accredited practice!  This team member will provide care for patients (cats, dogs, and small exotic pets including birds, reptiles, and small mammals) in all areas of our clinic; assist our veterinarians and our licensed veterinary technicians; and communicate with our clients. Hourly compensation and benefits provided. Our hospital hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. We also offer outpatient urgent care services from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Fridays, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Necessary qualities of candidates include:

  • Minimum age 19 years
  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Veterinary experience preferred (1 year or more) but not required
  • Commitment to delivering an outstanding client and pet experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including telephone etiquette

  • Must be able to hear patient monitoring equipment, and read labels, treatment instructions, computer screens, etc.
  • Must be able to concentrate and perform well in an often noisy and stressful environment
  • Must understand and follow all safety protocols
  • Must pass a background check

Our new team member must be prepared to perform a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Patient care (including dog walking, feeding and watering pets in hospital, taking rectal temperatures, monitoring pets in surgery, recognize signs of pain / distress, etc.)
  • Speaking to clients to obtain and record general history information about their pets
  • Restraining pets for exams, vaccinations, laboratory procedures, and euthanasia
  • Surgical prep and assistance with digital radiography
  • Using an autoclave, centrifuge, and other hospital equipment
  • Cleaning and disinfecting cages and kennel runs, cleaning exam rooms and surgery suite, laundry, trash removal, etc.
  • Grounds upkeep (pet waste removal) and keeping sidewalks clean and clear of snow / ice in winter
  • Recognizing commonly used drugs, counting out pills, typing Rx labels with instructions provided by veterinarian
  • Preparing injectable medications and vaccinations
  • Restocking hospital supplies and retail product displays
  • Collecting urine samples
  • Preparing blood samples
  • Client education and instruction
  • Assisting the front desk team as needed (greeting clients, taking client payments, answering phones, scheduling appointments, etc.)
